There is something within us that longs to be expressed. The more we give voice to what lives inside us ~
our joy, our sorrow, our fears, our hopes ~
the more fully alive we become.
Expression is not merely speaking; it is allowing what is within us to find its rightful place in the world.
What remains unspoken does not simply disappear. It settles quietly beneath the surface. Over time, those unspoken feelings can create distance between our heart and our daily lives.
They become layers we learn to live around, until we forget they are there. We may begin to believe that life itself has grown dull, when in truth it is our own emotional landscape that has become hidden beneath years of silence. It’s much like looking through a window that has slowly gathered dust.
We assume the world has lost its brilliance, unaware that it is our own view that has become clouded.
For much of my life, I carried a deep feeling of invisibility. It began in childhood, when pleasing my stepmother felt essential to my survival. My own hurts, disappointments, and longings remained largely unspoken.
Little by little, they formed a quiet layer of protection around my heart. Outwardly, I appeared open and emotionally available. Yet somewhere deep inside, there was a place that remained untouched. What began as protection eventually became isolation. It affected not only my relationships with my friends, but also the depth with which I could receive love, trust others, and allow myself to be fully known. For many years, I believed the world itself had grown less colorful. Only later did I realize I had been filtering out its deepest colors. That realization did not arrive all at once. It unfolded slowly, almost imperceptibly, as I began giving words to the feelings of invisibility I had carried for so long.
Every honest conversation. Every tear. Every truth I finally allowed myself to speak. Each one gently softened the walls around my heart. I have come to believe that authenticity lives in the delicate balance between what we carry within and what we allow to emerge. Just as a tree cannot flourish without healthy roots, our emotional lives cannot blossom if everything remains buried beneath the surface.
What is rooted deeply within us must eventually find its way toward the light. Otherwise, we spend our lives protecting ourselves from the very experiences that might heal us. Perhaps this is why emotional pain can feel so heavy.
Not because it is asking us to suffer ~
but because it is asking us to speak.
If you are carrying a hurt today, remember that you are larger than the pain pressing against your heart.
Your feelings are not your enemy. They are invitations. And sometimes, healing begins with the quiet courage to give them a voice.
