Where I am today is the outcome of my choices—whether five years ago, fifteen years ago, or even this morning. We are responsible for how our lives have unfolded and play a crucial part in shaping our future. While we’re constantly making decisions, we don’t always fully grasp their long-term impact.

I know I certainly didn’t when I was younger. The first step is clearly defining the kind of life you want.

My intention was to have a calm, comfortable, happy, simple, and uncomplicated life.

Before making any decisions, it’s essential to ask yourself, “Will this action bring me closer to the life I envision or push me further away from it?”

I didn’t start consciously asking myself these questions until I was in my 30s. The key is to consider the long-term consequences of your choices rather than just immediate gratification.

The easiest path at first can sometimes lead you further from where you truly want to go. A smooth journey in the wrong direction can be far more draining and disheartening than the effort of an uphill climb toward fulfillment and joy.

Every decision carries weight. For instance, if you choose to smoke or vape today, you might not be able to donate a lung to someone you love in the future—possibly even your child. How are you using what you have to make a difference? Do you have more than enough to give? Are you making meaningful contributions? Remember, there are no shortcuts to destinations truly worth reaching. Rather than seeking to place blame on others, turn inward. No matter how overwhelming, every situation stems from something that happened before. The natural gift lies in the wisdom we gain from it. When we learn from our past, we can break the cycle and avoid repeating the same mistakes. I didn’t grasp this as a teenager or a young adult; however, you have the chance to.

When you approach every living being, including yourself, with compassion, kindness, and understanding, the world around you instantly becomes better.
