I do not enjoy small talk. As an introverted empath, I have never been particularly good at it, and more often than not, it leaves me feeling drained.

Small talk has always felt somewhat forced to me ~

as though words are being used simply to fill the space, avoid an uncomfortable silence, or keep us safely away from anything deeper.

I would much rather have a meaningful conversation or simply share a comfortable silence than talk for the sake of talking. Over time, I have learned to give myself permission not to participate. I know some people may interpret my quietness as aloofness or even rudeness. I no longer feel ashamed of it, although I admit that I sometimes avoid social gatherings because I know how exhausting they can be for me.

How do you feel about small talk?

Does it come naturally to you?

Does it make you uncomfortable?

Do you dread it, or perhaps even enjoy it?

There is no right or wrong answer.

For myself, I have learned to approach small talk in an almost Zen-like way.

I don’t fight it, and I don’t force myself to perform. I simply listen. If the conversation begins to deepen, I join in.

If it doesn’t, I allow myself to remain quiet. And sometimes I find another person in the room with whom conversation flows a little more naturally. There is something freeing about realizing that I do not have to fill every silence.

Sometimes being present is enough.
